Alice Wadsworth has been co-editor of the Brixton Review of Books for five years. Last year they became Writer-in-Residence for Twenty-Twenty Gallery.
Since leaving my role as Deputy Fiction Editor at the Times Literary Supplement in 2022, where I still contribute book and theatre reviews, I’ve taken on more freelance work such as artist catalogues, interviews, and exhibition copy. In my free time I run a Queer Sex Ed Book Club at SET, volunteer with Switchboard LGBTQ+, and assist with the archives at 56A Infoshop.
Brixton Review of Books
2018 – Current
The Brixton Review of Books is a quarterly literary review founded by Michael Caines, Will Eaves and I (joined soon by Catharine Taylor and Yasha Muraban). We believe accessible print media is important, something we support in our editorial choices, but also by paying contributors fairly and making at least 50% of our print run available for free in libraries, bookshops and community spaces in South London. We received an Arts Council grant five years ago and have since relied on ad revenue, donations at events, and a pool of loyal subscribers (for £10 a year). As co-editor, my duties include commissioning pieces, speaking with distributors, managing social media, and copy editing the review.
Twenty-Twenty Gallery
2023 – present
As Writer-in-Residence, I create artist catalogues, website content and conduct artist interviews. I particularly enjoy interviewing artists, and taking up the challenge of describing an artist’s work with respect to their vision.
Times Literary Supplement
2018–2022
I started as an editorial assistant, second reading articles, taking on page edits, posting out books and updating the database. After showing competence I was entrusted with training editorial interns and moved on to a role as an Assistant Editor. Shortly after this I was given the role of Deputy Fiction Editor (in addition to my Assistant Editor role). Drawing on my Masters in Literature and Culture at King’s College London, I also commissioned reviews related to literary, cultural and queer theory. On top of gaining excellent commissioning and copyediting experience, I learned and used a range of production (laying out pages, kerning etc.), image editing (choosing, editing on Photoshop, and clearing permissions/copyright), and digital (loading articles on to the wordpress site, SEO etc.) skills
